Interview: Adrianna San Marco, Student Journalist Fired for Conservative View

“On her ouster from The Daily Orange, the student journalist says: ‘It also affects me as student because all my peers have banded together and tried to cancel me.'”

On June 20th, Merion West’s Kevin Turner was joined by Adrianna San Marco, the student journalist recently  profiled by Fox News for her ouster by The Daily Orange, Syracuse University’s student newspaper where she was a journalist.

In her own words, Ms. San Marco was fired due to an article she had written for LifeZette, a conservative news and commentary website. In the article entitled “Why institutional racism is a myth,” she makes an argument based on publicly available law enforcement data as well as peer-reviewed studies that challenges the notion that black Americans are disproportionately targeted by police officers.

While these statistics are commonly shared among conservative and centrist news sources, what brought her national fame was the firing itself. She suggests the firing was politically motivated.

An aspiring professional journalist, Ms. San Marco says this experience has opened her eyes to the “dark side of journalism,” citing how “cutthroat” and “exclusive” it can be to those who do not hold onto progressive viewpoints.

“My piece was not an angry rant; it was based on statistics and sources,”explains Ms. San Marco.

This firing has taken a greater toll than one might imagine. On her ouster from The Daily Orange, the student journalist says:

“It also affects me as student because all my peers have banded together and tried to cancel me, as they say. It was a hard hit for me socially since I got many hateful, nasty and threatening messages.”
